Once upon a time, a local
ruler, King Sulahkromo, had a patih, R.Sidopekso. The wife of the patih, Sri
Tanjung, was so beautiful.
One day, the King ordered
his patih on a mission that would take a long time to accomplish.
R.Sidopekso said goodbye to his wife that was pregnant.
When the R.Sidopekso went,
the baby born. And Dayang whose help the childbirth.
Actually, Dayang was
wicked. She was kidnapping the baby and throwed it to a river. Sri Tanjung
didn’t know about it.
When she woke up, she knows
that her baby was lost. She was so worried and sad.
Then, the dayang told to R.
Sidopekso, that Sri Tanjung throwed her baby to a river.
Heard that, R. Sidopekso
was so angry to his wife. Sri Tanjung cried. She was so sad.
For proved that, she didn’t
throw the baby, she asks him to a river. She said “If the river smells good, it means I’m innocent. However if the river
smells bad, it means Dayang was lying.”
Then, Sri Tanjung throwed
herself to the river.
Amazingly, the river smelled good. R. Sidapaksa was very sorry.
Sri Tanjung died. He regretted not to believe her.
When the river smelled good, people instantly people call it
“Banyuwangi”.
‘Banyu’ means water and ‘Wangi’ means good smell. Since then the
place is named Banyuwangi.
