The Legend of Tangkuban Perahu |
Orientation
Once upon a time, there lived a
beautiful woman, named Dayang Sumbi. She lived lonely in a hut in the middle of
forest. She weaved clothes all the days.
Complication
One day, when she was going home
from bathing in the river, she met a strong and handsome youth, named
Sangkalalana. But, Dayang Sumbi knew that the youth was actually his son,
Sangkuriang.
Sangkuriang was very interested in
her beauty. So, he told her that he wanted to marry her.
“You proposed to your own mother,
Sangkuriang. Don’t do that!” said Dayang Sumbi.
Sangkuriang did not want to listen
to her explanation. He urged her to marry with him.
“Dam up the river Citarum and make a
boat for us, Sangkuriang!”
“Is it your requirement for me to
marry you?” asked Sangkuriang.
“Yes,“ answer Dayang Sumbi while
nodding her head. Dayang Sumbi thought that it was impossible for Sangkuriang
to fulfill her conditions.
Sangkuriang started to dam up the
river Citarum soon after the sunset. He worked very hard. And after the
midnight his first work finished. Then he continued to do the other work. He
began to make a boat. He cut dow trees in the forest.
Knowing that Sangkuriang almost
finished his work, Dayang Sumbi was very worried. So she made a trick to stop
Sangkuriang doing his work. She switched her white clothes on the sky. So it
seemed that night would end and the sun would rise soon.
Resolution
Knowing this, Sangkuriang was
disappointed and got angry. He could not cantrol his anger. Then, he kicked his
boat with strong power so that it flew on the sky and fell down on the mountain
facing doenward. Since then, people call it mount “Tangkubanparahu”. ‘Tanguban’
means facing downward and ‘parahu’ means boat.
